Meeting the White Rhinoceros

Ceratotherium simum

Statut de Conservation (Liste Rouge de l'UICN): Quasi menacée (NT)

It looks ancient — like something left over from another time.

The white rhino is huge, heavy, and built low to the ground. It grazes in open grasslands with its broad mouth down, moving slowly, steadily, in silence.

Despite the size, it’s not aggressive by nature. But it’s wary, and with reason. Poaching has made it one of the most heavily guarded animals on Earth. Mothers are deeply protective. Calves stay close, running just behind their mothers’ heels.

It doesn’t need to be fast — just left alone.
