Hippopotamus amphibius
Statut de Conservation (Liste Rouge de l'UICN):
Vulnérable (VU)
It spends most of the day submerged — still, silent, watching.
Hippos live in rivers and lakes, packed close together, but far from calm. They are territorial, short-tempered, and fiercely protective. At dusk, they leave the water to graze, moving slowly on land despite their size. But if threatened — in water or out — they charge with terrifying speed.
Their jaws are enormous, their presence impossible to ignore. They don’t hunt, but they dominate. Seen from a distance, they seem lazy. Up close, they’re nothing of the sort.
