Meeting the Lesser Mousedeer

Tragulus kanchil

Statut de Conservation (Liste Rouge de l'UICN): Préoccupation mineure (LC)

It barely makes a sound — no bigger than a rabbit, with legs like pencils and eyes too large for its face.

The lesser mousedeer moves through dense undergrowth, alone, quick, and nearly invisible. It feeds on fallen fruit, leaves, and shoots, slipping through forest shadows with barely a rustle.

Despite its size, it’s not timid — just cautious. When startled, it freezes, then bolts in a blur of legs and leaf litter. No antlers, no horns, no herd — just one of the forest’s smallest hoofed mammals, surviving by staying unseen.
