Rusa unicolor
Statut de Conservation (Liste Rouge de l'UICN):
Vulnérable (VU)
Big-bodied, deep-chested, and always alert. Sambar deer live in forests and thick undergrowth, moving cautiously through shadow and cover. They feed on leaves, shoots, and fallen fruit, often near water, often alone.
Males grow rugged, three-tined antlers and carry a dark, shaggy mane down the neck. When alarmed, they freeze — then bark, loud and sharp, before melting into the trees.
They’re hard to see, but leave signs everywhere: tracks, scat, a quiet shift in the bush. They are steady, strong, and built for the deep forest.
