Meeting the Malayan Colugo

Galeopterus variegatus

Statut de Conservation (Liste Rouge de l'UICN): Préoccupation mineure (LC)

It looks like a mix of bat, lemur, and leaf — but it’s none of those things.

The colugo clings to tree trunks by day, motionless and flat against the bark. At dusk, it glides from branch to branch using a skin membrane stretched from neck to tail to fingertips.

It doesn’t fly, but it floats — silently, precisely, covering long distances without a sound. It feeds on leaves, sap, and fruit, and almost never comes down to the ground. Mothers carry their young wrapped in the same gliding skin.

Rarely seen, never noisy — a quiet shape in the forest air.
