Rhinoceros unicornis
Statut de Conservation (Liste Rouge de l'UICN):
Vulnérable (VU)
It looks like it’s wearing plates of armor — thick folds of skin edged like seams.
The Indian rhino lives near rivers, swamps, and grasslands, often wallowing in mud or grazing in tall reeds. Despite its bulk, it moves with calm purpose, following familiar paths through dense vegetation.
It has only one horn, but it’s more than enough. Bulls can be territorial, and fights leave scars. Most of the time, though, they live alone — quiet, steady, and focused on feeding.
Protected in parts of India and Nepal, this species has made a slow comeback — a rare conservation success, still unfolding.
