Meeting the Central American Spider Monkey

Ateles geoffroyi

Statut de Conservation (Liste Rouge de l'UICN): En danger (EN)

Long arms, even longer tail — like a fifth limb that grips, balances, and swings.

Spider monkeys travel fast and high, rarely touching the ground. They leap between treetops with fluid motion, covering long distances through the canopy in search of ripe fruit. Their fingers are narrow, their thumbs almost gone — better for grasping branches than holding tools.

They live in fission-fusion groups, splitting and rejoining throughout the day. Quiet most of the time, but sharp when they need to be. Elusive, agile, and full of forest rhythm — they live where the trees are tall and the sky is mostly leaves.
