Meeting the Terai Sacred Langur

Semnopithecus hector

Statut de Conservation (Liste Rouge de l'UICN): Quasi menacée (NT)

Long-limbed, pale-furred, and rarely in a hurry.

These langurs move through the upper branches of sal forests and riverine woods, feeding on leaves, fruit, and bark. They live in groups, often calm, often silent, their presence marked more by movement than sound.

Their faces are dark and framed with white — striking against the green. Infants cling to their mothers’ chests; older juveniles leap between branches in bursts of energy.

They’re watchful but not restless, adapted to the high shade and quiet clearings of the lowland Terai. Sacred in name, elusive in habit — a calm figure in a fast-changing world.
