The pygmy right whale is the smallest and least known member of the baleen whale family. It is the only living species of the family Neobalaenidae, making it an evolutionary outlier among whales. Found in the cold, temperate waters of the Southern Hemisphere, this elusive species is rarely seen and remains one of the most mysterious large marine mammals.

The pygmy right whale is significantly smaller than other baleen whales, measuring between 4 and 6.5 meters (13–21 feet) in length and weighing up to 3,500 kg (7,700 lbs). Its streamlined body is more slender compared to other right whales, and it has a small, falcate (sickle-shaped) dorsal fin positioned far back on its body—an unusual feature among right whales.

Its skin is dark gray on the back, with lighter gray or white undersides. The pygmy right whale’s head is proportionally smaller than those of other baleen whales, with a gently arched jawline and uniquely-shaped baleen plates that are yellowish and finely fringed. Unlike its larger relatives, it lacks the massive callosities seen on other right whales.

Where Does the Pygmy Right Whale Live?

Pygmy right whales inhabit cold, temperate waters in the Southern Hemisphere, primarily around the southern coasts of Australia, New Zealand, South America, and South Africa. Their range extends into the sub-Antarctic waters, but they do not venture into the extreme polar regions.

They are typically found in deep offshore waters, but occasional strandings suggest they may sometimes come closer to coastal areas. Due to their elusive nature and preference for remote regions, little is known about their exact distribution and population size.

What Do Pygmy Right Whales Eat?

Like other baleen whales, pygmy right whales are filter feeders. Their diet consists primarily of small crustaceans such as krill and copepods. Using their comb-like baleen plates, they strain food from the water while swimming with their mouths open.

Unlike some baleen whales that engage in dramatic lunge-feeding behaviors, pygmy right whales are believed to feed more passively, skimming through dense patches of plankton and filtering food through their fine baleen. Their small size and relatively low energy needs suggest they require less food than larger whales.

What Eats Pygmy Right Whales? – Predators & Natural Enemies

Due to their remote and elusive nature, there is limited information about the natural predators of pygmy right whales. However, it is likely that orcas (Orcinus orca) and large sharks pose a threat, particularly to juveniles and weak individuals.

There is no known history of large-scale human hunting of pygmy right whales, as they were never targeted by commercial whaling. However, they may still face threats from entanglement in fishing gear, ship strikes, and ocean pollution.

Behavior & Lifestyle

Pygmy right whales are one of the least understood cetaceans, as they are rarely seen in the wild. Observations suggest they are generally solitary or travel in small groups of two to five individuals. They are not known for breaching or making dramatic surface movements like some other baleen whales.

Their movements and migration patterns remain largely unknown, but strandings suggest they may undertake seasonal migrations. They are thought to be slow swimmers, often moving at a leisurely pace near the ocean surface. Unlike other right whales, pygmy right whales do not raise their flukes above the water when diving.

How Do Pygmy Right Whales Reproduce?

Due to the rarity of sightings and the lack of research, little is known about the reproductive behavior of pygmy right whales. However, as baleen whales, they likely follow similar reproductive patterns to their relatives.

Females probably give birth to a single calf after a gestation period of around 10 to 12 months. Calves are born measuring around 2 meters (6.5 feet) in length and rely on their mother’s milk for nourishment during the early months of life. It is believed that pygmy right whales have a slow reproductive rate, similar to other baleen whales, with females giving birth every few years.

Are Pygmy Right Whales Endangered? – Conservation Status & Threats

Conservation Status (IUCN): Least Concern (LC)

The pygmy right whale (Caperea marginata) is currently classified as Least Concern on the IUCN Red List, with this assessment last updated on January 4, 2018. This classification suggests that the species is not considered at immediate risk of extinction.

However, due to its elusive nature and the scarcity of sightings, there is limited data on its global population trends and potential threats. Consequently, some sources have previously listed the species as Data Deficient, indicating a need for more comprehensive research to accurately assess its conservation status. ​

The pygmy right whale is also listed in Appendix I of the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species (CITES), which includes species threatened with extinction and provides the highest level of protection by prohibiting international trade.

Additionally, it is included in Appendix II of the Convention on the Conservation of Migratory Species of Wild Animals (CMS), recognizing that while the species may not currently be threatened with extinction, it would benefit from international cooperation and agreements to ensure its conservation.​

Despite the current classification of Least Concern, the lack of detailed information on the pygmy right whale’s ecology, behavior, and population dynamics highlights the importance of continued research and monitoring to ensure its long-term conservation.
